A recent study found that the most common side effect of esomeprazole (Nexium), the active ingredient in Nexium, is gastrointestinal symptoms. It is also responsible for about one third of all deaths in the US and more than half of the deaths related to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
The study, published in theJournal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, included 24,600 patients who took Nexium for 14 days.
The researchers compared the side effects of Nexium and the placebo (an inactive drug) in 24,600 patients with frequent GERD, who were admitted to the hospital for 14 days. The researchers looked at whether the patient had experienced more gastrointestinal symptoms than either the placebo or Nexium. The researchers found that patients who took Nexium for 14 days experienced a significantly greater percentage of gastrointestinal symptoms than those who took placebo.
According to Dr. James H. Coughlin, Professor of Gastroenterology, and lead researcher of the study, “There is a significant relationship between the side effects of esomeprazole and gastrointestinal symptoms and the need for long-term treatment of patients with GERD.”
He said: “Nexium, which is the active ingredient in Nexium, is often used to treat conditions associated with acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The gastrointestinal side effects associated with Nexium are gastrointestinal symptoms such as heartburn, loose stools and nausea. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects a significant portion of people, including the elderly, people with heart disease, those with pre-existing heart disease, and people with liver disease.”
Dr. Coughlin said that he believes that the study is the first to look at the relationship between Nexium and the risk of heartburn and gastrointestinal symptoms in the elderly. He added: “The results of the study show that patients who took Nexium for 14 days had a significantly greater percentage of heartburn than those who took a placebo.”
Peter R. Berenson, Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Washington, the study’s author, there was no significant relationship between Nexium use and heartburn or stomach pain.
He said: “Heartburn is a common side effect of esomeprazole. However, the amount of heartburn that can occur in patients taking Nexium for 14 days is small compared to that associated with a placebo.”

They found that the patients who took Nexium for 14 days had a significantly greater percentage of heartburn than those who took placebo.

The researchers found that the patients who took Nexium for 14 days had a significantly greater percentage of stomach pain than those who took placebo.
Coughlin, Dr. R. J. M. Horsley, Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Washington, said that the study’s findings “provide the latest scientific evidence that esomeprazole is a useful adjunct to therapy for patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and should be used as a first-line therapy in patients with GERD who have not responded to conventional therapy.
